A POLAR bear has been shot dead after it attacked two guards from a Hapag Lloyd Cruises cruise ship on an Arctic archipelago.
The cruise line’s MS Bremen landed on the most northern island of the Svalbard archipelago last Sat when the incident occurred, leaving one guard injured.
The guard was “attacked by a polar bear and injured on his head”, leading to the bear being killed “in an act of self-defence,” Hapag Lloyd Cruises head of communications Negar Etminan said in a statement.
