A 79-year-old hobbyist in New Zealand now has a major new project, after buying a 14 tonne engine formerly used to power an ocean ship.
The big boy’s toy (pictured) came from the 50-year-old cargo ship Rangatira which was scrapped earlier this year.
Alan Averis, who is a retired diesel engineer, had his new plaything transported to the Geraldine Vintage Car and Machinery Museum south of Christchurch.
He plans to work on it with a couple of his pals, with the aim of getting it started in time for the museum’s annual Crank Up Day in Nov.
