THE West Australian Government has committed an additional $8 million for the upgrade of Broome Port, which will aim to improve cruise ship access and boost local tourism in time for the 2019 cruise season in Oct.
The work to dredge the port channel of surrounding rock will allow round-the-clock access for cruise ships, which currently dock at irregular hours due to the port’s navigational hazards.
“The original funding commitment has been increased to ensure the best possible outcome for shipping accessibility,” said WA Transport Minister Rita Saffioti.
“Airfares from Perth to Broome are also creating real opportunities for more people to visit the Kimberley,” Saffioti added.
Dredging will start mid-2019.
