EUROPEAN Waterways’ canal barge cruises have been less impacted by the continent’s historic drought than other river lines in the region.
The design of the man-made waterways helps to maintain their consistent levels, as the historic drought conditions in Europe dry up many of the continent’s major rivers, impacting vessel traffic.
However, there is no natural flow of water subject to nature in a canal, and large reservoirs keep the channels “topped up.”
As a result, European Waterways has been able to operate its many luxury hotel barges in Europe with less disruption than cruise lines on the larger bodies of water, such as the Rhine and the Danube.
