Cunard is celebrating the summer of British tennis, and the 80th anniversary of Queen Mary’s first ever voyage, by publishing a previously unreleased picture of celebrated British championship tennis player Fred Perry onboard the company’s flagship liner in 1936.
This historic picture was taken onboard Queen Mary in 1936, the same year Fred Perry won his third men’s singles title at Wimbledon and the flagship liner first took to the seas.
This never before published photo, signed and dated by the iconic tennis champion, highlights a pivotal point in history, as the year Queen Mary sailed her maiden voyage, along with the tennis legends’ first trip on the luxury liner.
Its release comes during a historic month for Cunard with the newly remastered Queen Mary 2 setting sail last week from Southampton to New York, following an investment of around £90 million (approx AU$165 million) – one of the most significant refurbishments undertaken by the world’s most famous passenger shipping line.
Guests onboard Queen Mary 2’s voyage to New York, and those on sister ships Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria will all have the pleasure of witnessing Britain’s renowned tennis tournament from the sea, with Wimbledon broadcast live on all three ships.
