HOT on the heels of Australia’s plan to perhaps eliminate invasive carp from the Murray-Darling basin (CW yesterday) comes the story of a British fisherman in France who has caught what must be one of the world’s largest goldfish.
The 32kg monster (pictured) was pulled up by 42-year-old Briton Andy Hackett, who was fishing in the French region of Champagne.
The fish is nicknamed “the Carrot” and was actually introduced into the Bluewater Lakes fishery, which is a commercial operation offering opportunities for fishers to make a big catch.
A spokesperson for the Lakes said “the Carrot” was stocked 15 years ago “as something different for the anglers to catch” – with the brightly coloured creature actually caught about nine times last fishing season, each time being measured and then released.
The well-fed fish has continued to gain weight, coming in at about 30kg the last time it was caught in Feb.
