Pullmantur Cruises’ Zenith was stranded
for several hours outside Venice on Tuesday
after a fire in its engine room.
Owned by the Spanish company, a subsidiary
of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, the ship was
about 20 kilometres off Chioggia, on the
southern tip of the Venice Lagoon, and had to
be towed to the city’s port.
The cruise was cancelled and 1,500
passengers were flown home, with nobody
injured, according to Italian & Spanish media.
The incident follows protests about the
safety of big cruise ships sailing in and out of
the famous Giudecca Canal.
